Obama should be the U.S. (previous) president who has played the most photos so far. On January 10th in his farewell address in his hometown of Chicago, VRScout and Radiant Images, Vantage.tv, Nokia OZO and the White House team completed the first multi-platform VR. Live broadcast, allowing global audiences to experience the parting speech of “Olympiad†in a 360° environment. Participant Eric Chevalier recently wrote in VRScout about how the team shared this historical event with global audiences via VR on Facebook, Youtube and Twitter. Preparatory preparation The VRScout team began discussions with the White House in January 2016. President Obama is a leader who is passionate about new technologies. He was the first president in the history of the United States to launch and was the first Mr. President to use Facebook to broadcast live and play Snapchat filters. In the 360° video “Through The Ages†of Felix & Paul’s Yosemite National Park, the President also appeared in person and became a landmark event in the history of VR video. In view of this, the VRScout team also conceived several ways to accomplish Obama's farewell presentation, one of which was bold. They wanted to use space capture technology to record the President’s speech before the speech, and then save the data in a holographic manner. Down. They called this project: HOLOBAMA. Obviously, this did not happen later. Professional advice: In the face of White House staff, please use the jargon “Shoot†or “Capture†cautiously. After several months of coordination, the team was finally allowed to broadcast VR for the president's farewell speech. At that time, it was already the New Year's Day 2017 and it was only one week away from the farewell speech. Fortunately, the team has a close partnership with Nokia and Radiant Images, and can get the equipment and materials needed in a short time. How to shoot In terms of equipment, the team chose Nokia's OZO to shoot. Xiao Bian guessed because VRScout's good friend is Nokia, and Radiant Images is Nokia's designated OZO sales and leasing company, so you know. The team flew to Chicago to prepare for the event a few days ago. It communicated with the White House officials and stepped on the spot. The team took a total of four OZO cameras, three in battle, and one as a backup. Due to security and other reasons, once the location is determined, the team has only a short time to assume the machine. The key: must fight for the camera position All the students who have filmed the 360° video of the big scene should all know this kind of pain, that is, the organizers basically have no concept of VR live broadcasting. They will not understand why your home camera must be inserted in the middle of the front. position. Because the traditional equipment has Zoom function, so they do not need to be able to complete the task very much on the front, but obviously VR camera is not enough, even if it is OZO. In the communication with the White House, the team has always stressed that at least one device needs to be within 3 to 4 meters from the President. After arriving at the venue, the team also spared no effort to secure the location of the White House security shooting, the latter’s goal being to control the media in the media area. In an effort to achieve results, the team received at least one pass for placing equipment shots in the seating area. From the picture, the team originally wanted to place the machine in the area closest to the president, one on the right and one on the left and right. The ideal was full and the reality was very edgy. In the end, only one machine remained in the area. The other two unfortunately retreated to the media area. Lights and sounds There are two important factors that can not be ignored in 360° video shooting. One is light and the other is sound. For this event, sound becomes the most direct one. Although the OZO has 8 microphones that can record panoramic sounds, the team chose to use the Mic channel in front of the president directly. After all, the president’s speech is much more important than the ambient sound. For the team, there is limited control over lighting. Onstage and behind the president’s speech are clusters of lights, and the media area is relatively dark. If the students watching the VR live on the day should know that the picture of the No. 2 seat is the darkest, the team rarely cuts into this seat during the live broadcast. The result of the No. 3 machine got the best picture because it was in the middle of the podium and was closest to the president. How to push live streaming In several live broadcast platforms, Youtube is the most direct video stream. This is why VRScout chose to embed Youtube video frames in web pages for users to watch. There is also a push on Facebook and Twitter, but for these platforms to complete the 360° live video, some development is needed. Periscope's 360 live broadcast is targeted at specific users. Facebook's 360 live broadcast is still in Alpha stage. Only NG has done a live broadcast. Since OZO is used, of course, OZO Live Live mode is used. The students of vantage.tv team set up a broadcast station in the media area, responsible for monitoring the three-way video stream and switching among them. The team used three Elemental encoders to encode each OZO video stream and also prepared Wowza as a backup. Meaning greater than substance With regard to VR live broadcasting, 87870 has written many articles to elaborate. In the current situation, there are still many areas for improvement in VR broadcast. The VR live is good or bad, and it is not so much related to the people and events being shot. Whether it is Obama or Faye Wong, VR Live is a large-scale PR opportunity for the hardware and shooting team, which is not very helpful for the audience at the art and appreciation level. Of course, the constant attempts of the shooting team can, to a certain extent, change the views of practitioners in the traditional industry, and lay the foundation for the subsequent upgrade and development of the VR live broadcast. For this, 87870 also has to cheer on these teams.
