Xia Changshi (1903 ~ 1996)
Mr. Xia Changshi was born in an overseas Chinese engineer family in Guangdong Province in May 1903. He studied in Germany when he was young. In 1928, he graduated from Karlspur University of Technology in Germany with a degree in architecture and obtained an engineer qualification. In 1932, he received his Ph.D. from the Institute of Art History at the University of Tübingen, Germany. After returning to China, he worked as an engineer in the Ministry of Railways and the Ministry of Communications in Nanjing from 1932 to 1939. From 1940 to 1941, he was a professor at the National Art Institute and Tongji University. From 1942 to 1945, he was a professor at the Central University and Chongqing University. He was a professor at Sun Yat-sen University from 1946 to 1952. He was re-appointed as a professor at South China Institute of Technology in 1952 and moved to Freiburg, Germany in August 1973.
He has served as a council member of the second and third sessions of the China Architecture Society and served as the executive director of the Guangdong Garden Society.
In 1982, he returned to Hong Kong to live in Hong Kong and returned to Guangzhou to guide and participate in the design of the Overseas Chinese Hospital of Jinan University. His main design works include: South China Institute of Technology Library, Administrative Office Building, Teaching Building and Campus Planning, Guangzhou Cultural Park Aquatic Museum, Zhongshan Medical College Hospital Building, Teaching Building Group and Laboratory, Zhanjiang Seafarers Club, Hainan Subtropical Research The expert building, the design of three new colleges and universities in Wuhan, the Dinghushan Teachers' Health Center, the planning and design of Guilin Scenic Area, and the design of Guangxi Medical College. Among them, the teaching building group of Zhongshan Medical College won the Excellent Architectural Creation Award issued by the Architectural Society of China in 1993.
He is the author of "The Garden", and has published many articles on subtropical architecture, Chinese gardens and Lingnan gardens in the Journal of Architecture, Journal of Landscape Architecture, Architectural Theory and Practice. .
Mr. Xia Changshi died on December 4, 1996 in Freiburg, Germany.
