Silicon Labs (also known as "Core Technology") and Calnex SoluTIons today announced a validated reference design for ITU-T G.8262 compliant 25G and 100G Ethernet Rate Synchronous Ethernet (SyncE) applications. The solution is based on the Marvell Alaska C-Series high-speed Ethernet transceiver, the Silicon Labs Si5348 low-jitter network synchronization clock, and the Calnex Paragon-100G test platform. 
Cisco VNI forecasts that mobile data traffic is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 46% between 2016 and 2021. This shift is driving service providers to deploy higher capacity 25GbE and 100GbE links to transport mobile data back from wireless base stations to metro/core optical networks. 4G and 5G networks have stringent requirements for phase and frequency synchronization to mitigate interference and more effectively share user bandwidth between adjacent cellular base stations. The mobile backhaul and preamble networks will use a combination of IEEE 1588 and SyncE to distribute phase and frequency synchronization in the network. Silicon Labs and Marvell joint solutions enable device providers to extend SyncE to their top-of-the-line backhaul networks and preamble networks, and are confidently designed with proven packet network synchronization solutions.

This joint solution uses the Silicon Labs Si5348 low jitter network synchronizer and the Marvell Alaska C 88X5123 and 88X5113 25GbE/100GbE industrial temperature Ethernet transceivers. The Si5348 Synchronizer is Silicon Labs' growing portfolio of high-performance network synchronization products, the industry's lowest and most integrated clocking solution for synchronous Ethernet jitter. The industry's industry-leading 100fs rms (typ) jitter performance optimizes transceiver performance and helps minimize system-level bit error rates. The device supports three fully independent, frequency-flexible DSPLLs that support SyncE clock synchronization, clock generation, and general-purpose timing for FPGAs, processors, and other devices.
The solution is tested using the Calnex Paragon-100G, a SyncE-compliant test platform that delivers industry-leading measurement accuracy for automated drift, jitter, transient and IEEE-1588 precision time protocol testing. The total solution, including the network synchronizer and Ethernet transceiver, has been thoroughly tested and fully compliant with the ITU-T G.8262 standard. Test results show that the solution has significant margins for the G.8262 Ethernet Device Clock (EEC) Option 1 and Option 2 jitter generation and jitter tolerance requirements. The design is optimized to minimize phase transients caused by protective switches such as fiber turn-off. The resulting solution provides considerable margin for the current ITU-T G.8262 specification and the more stringent G.8262.1 enhanced EEC standard currently under development.
