At the RSA Information Security Symposium in San Francisco last week, Internet Society's Network Technology Chief (CITO) Olaf Kolkman and IBM Resilient's Chief Technology Officer (CTO) Bruce Schneier (also author of several well-known cryptography books) The two former technology people in different camps (convenience first or safety first) found that they are in an incredible alliance about the issue of IoT security.

Basically, Kolkman advocates that the industry must basically establish the defensive function of the Internet of Things; and Schneier, the anti-state compulsory liberal, agrees that it is time to develop rules for these connected gadgets.

"For many years, most of us have been liberals, we don't want to be bound by heavy regulations, but when the Internet crashes in the real world, causing someone to really be killed, absolute freedom is not an option. Schneier went on to say: "Now is not the time to discuss regulation and non-regulation, because the ship has already been opened. The question now is to design clever norms, or stupid norms!"

The industry has envisioned this problem because it does not care about the security of any IoT device for the benefit of the company; ordinary people are not currently concerned about this issue, so anything that may increase product cost and price Will be resisted by the manufacturer.

Schneier thinks this is like a car in the 1950s. At that time, the seat belts were not standard equipment for cars. Only a small number of cars were equipped, of course, there were no airbags, and no customer asked the car manufacturers to install them. It is because the US government has found that the number of deaths on the road has risen, so it has begun to formulate regulations on driving safety and enforced it. In modern cars, safety belts and airbags have become standard equipment.

He added that we are now in a similar situation. It shouldn't be long, we will see the first case of accidental death using IoT devices in our lifetime, which may lead to a large number of Internet crashes, or intrusions or other accidents when using smart cars and smart building personal devices. .

Government should monitor IoT equipment

Kolkmany said he is in favor of the government's regulation of IoT devices. These devices must have at least the ability to update and patch. In practice, once the mainstream market moves toward such a route, the rest will follow.

He pointed out that the EU has a data privacy law. If a company violates the regulations, it will be punished with a fine of up to 4% of global income. If there are similar IoT regulations, manufacturers must also manufacture products in accordance with EU regulations, and products can be sold in Europe, and the rest of the world will benefit.

Craig Spiezle, chairman of the agenda host and the Online Trust Alliance, said he is not optimistic about whether the current US Republican federal government is proposing new regulations, but individual states can be the leader.

"I heard that California is in the process of implementing IoT equipment regulation, which is encouraging," he continued. "California was the first state to develop anti-spam and child protection laws. It seems that California will also Stay ahead of the IoT security."

But there are still some listeners who don't want any mandatory policies. Alex Gantman, vice president of product safety engineering at Qualcomm, said that in his career, he has never seen a law that makes IT equipment safer. In some cases, red tape regulations can have the opposite effect.

The author believes that the operators of domestic Internet of Things-related products should also pay attention to this trend and prepare for the early response.

You know IoT security is bad when libertarians call for strict regulaTIon
