Dave Smith loves cooking. The thing that gives him the same satisfaction is to take a ripe pepper from the pot and throw it into the saucepan, making it the crowning touch of his latest cooking fun.

But Dave had a problem when planting peppers in Texas. In the courtyard, his favorite plants often died in the summer because of the hot temperatures.

So, he started looking for a solution.

“In the hot weather of Texas, the water in these pots will completely evaporate during the day, so I need a way to water these plants all day,” he said. “I used to be in the UK. I have planted peppers, but I have never encountered such problems. However, plants here usually die due to overheating."

TI MSP MCU product marketing engineer combines his passion for gardening, creativity and the expertise and skills of the MSP430 MCU to create an automatic pepper watering system called Pepper Filling Station. This ingenious design uses only a few simple products from the MSP430 MCU, and the overall construction cost is less than $50.

Thanks to the “Chilli Gas Station”, Dave is now able to automatically water his plants for up to five days without flooding the house or causing fires due to line faults. And his plants are currently growing healthily and vigorously.

"Chilli gas station" works

The “Chilli Gas Station” uses the MSP430FR5969 FRAM LaunchPad with a capacitive touch screen controller user interface as the core. Its purpose is to set the watering schedule and display the timing on the Sharp Memory LCD BoosterPack. When needed, the MCU sends a signal to the relay board to turn on the power to the pump. The water is stored in a large soda bottle that can support up to 7 days after being filled with water.

Dave has looked at some expensive commercial watering systems, but can only find systems for large greenhouses or gardens. He ordered several components, such as a 6V pump and a relay control board, and combined these components with the TI products he had at hand. He also wants to add a soil moisture sensor to prevent excessive watering.

Although there are currently hundreds of different peppers and sweet peppers, Dave only grows several of them, such as bell pepper. He said that he enjoyed the pleasure of adding fresh peppers to his recipes.

“I am not an avid gardening enthusiast, but I found that picking peppers directly from the pepper trees and adding them to the recipe will make me feel very cured,” he said. “It’s cooked with your own peppers. The food is indeed a pleasure."

Take two angle irons and punch two holes on each side against the wall and one hole on the side not against the wall to connect with the iron pipe.
