Globe Telecom in the Philippines announced that it is on track to expand its LTE coverage to 95% of the country's cities and autonomous regions by the end of the year.

By the end of September, the operator had covered about 90 percent of cities and autonomous regions, deploying nearly 12,000 LTE base stations in the first three quarters.

Globe made a commitment to 95 percent coverage to secure approval from the regulator, the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC), when it joined with rival Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT) to acquire spectrum assets held by San Miguel Corp.

These assets include the valuable 700MHz spectrum, as well as spectrum on 2600MHz and other frequency bands.

Global Telecom said nearly 3,000 of its 12,000 LTE base stations support the 700MHz band and more than 3,700 support the 2600MHz band.

Half of the newly deployed cell sites in 2018 were located in Metro Manila, 35% were located in North and South Luzon, and 15% were located in the Visayas and Mindanao.

"The new spectrum allows Globe to rapidly roll out LTE services nationwide," commented Joel Agustin, senior vice president of Globe's Network Technology Group. With the deployment of LTE in many cities and autonomous regions, we believe that more and more Filipinos will experience better Internet services."
