R&D efforts will focus on two products with increasing global demand, namely energy-efficient power semiconductors used in industrial machinery, and white LEDs for automotive and street lighting applications. From now until 2016, Toshiba plans to invest 30 billion yen (equivalent to approximately RMB 1.60 billion) in the development and manufacture of these products.
Toshiba plans to build new technology in the fall of 2015. Its subsidiary, Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan, will be the R&D and production base of new technologies, and will accommodate about 300 people from Toshiba in the production bases in Hyogo and Kanagawa. The technicians will recruit about 100 to 200 people from outside in the future. 
According to Japanese media reports, Toshiba decided to focus its R&D activities on power semiconductors and white LEDs on its subsidiary, Kaga Toshiba Electronics.
