ACRN vs. Xen
The Linux Foundation has hosted the Xen project, a project dedicated to providing hypervisor solutions for embedded and automotive applications. In 2017, it was reported that the Xen project has taken embedded and other scenarios as the main direction since Amazon Web Services announced that it will not use Xen as a long-term management program solution. 
ACRN is mainly composed of two parts: the hypervisor software and device model, which supports the sharing of numerous I/O devices. Intel's rich experience and leadership in virtualization technology played a key role in the initial development of this hypervisor solution.

Developers will benefit from ACRN because of its miniaturization and real-time features, which are flexible enough to handle different application scenarios and consider security-critical services. Considering that different IoT services have different security requirements on the same physical platform, it helps reduce the cost of development and implementation, and makes the system architecture more optimized. The integration of electronic component units (ECUs) in automotive applications is one such example. Unlike other current open source hypervisor software, ACRNTM is an open source hypervisor reference software specifically designed for embedded IoT products.

The Linux Foundation has announced a new type of management program designed specifically for embedded and IoT scenarios. The project named ACRN will be responsible for providing a set of management procedures to control various device modes that contain I/O mediators. Since then, Linux will also introduce a Linux-based service operating system that can "running multiple guest operating systems simultaneously (including another Linux instance, RTOS, Android, or other operating system).
